Week 1

Car control / physics

I wanted the cars to have quite detailed physics to them because that would make them more fun to drive and give me more options for customizing them. I had seen a system for creating vehicle physics that used raycasts to power a spring. I spent an afternoon trying to recreate this on my own but it didn’t really work because my springs didn’t have any damping force so the car just bounced around lots.

The next day I found a half finished tutorial series that helped me build the suspension for the cars. It also helped me set up tire forces and steering. Once I had finished all there was in the tutorial series I had a pretty decent car but it was a bit too wobbly and tipped over too much. I spent the rest of the week tweaking stuff to get the car to drive nicely.
